"I was close to Rain," said the ball of light. "You were the only one at fault in every argument the two of you ever had. He was always right. You were always wrong. He never provoked you and never did anything that wasn't perfectly honorable in all ways. He was perfect and you are the scum of the earth. You were the worst thing that ever happened to him. You traumatized him and he was never the same after you ruined his life. How dare you profane this city with your presence! Polar City should be a monument to the perfection of Rain and your presence darkens it's doorstep." It hovered near NoFace and paused as though it had to take a breath. "I am also perfect in every way. I have every right to be as rude and cruel to you as I like. You will pay for every slight on Rain for the rest of your life. I'll see to that. I will sabotage your efforts to make ammends because someone like you deserves no forgiveness. I will speak against you to your friends and join with your enemies just to spite you. It doesn't matter that you have changed. I am a perfect creature of light who can do no wrong and is always right ... no matter what I say. I am The Light. So far as I am concerned, you are the darkness. I will see you hated and punished in perpituity because you, in a state of severe mental illness, said and did things contrary to Rain's wishes and comfort several years ago." The Light stated all this as though it were fact.
NoFace didn't roll her eyes. No matter how badly she wanted to. It would be, in a small way, dignifying all the crap she just heard. Instead she smiled a little smile and tilted her head thoughtfully to one side. "I'm glad you told me. Has anyone ever told you you're adorable when you're bigoted and narrow-minded? Both indicate the same mental condition ... but I feel the need to make with the flowery talk in hopes of matching your verbal prowess. Hope you don't mind."
"I AM THE LIGHT!" it said in an exasperated manner. "No one needs to tell me I am adorable. I am perfect in all ways and that proves my inherent attractiveness no matter what I am doing! Don't you understand the obvious metaphor and plot device here?"
"Oh," NoFace nodded. "I comprehend completely. You fancy yourself my nemesis and will go out of your way to be unpleasant rather than forgive. You will, in fact be engaging in the very behaviors for which you condemn me. This is the kind of irony I have come to expect from my life. But there's a difference. When I did these things, I was very sick. You are making a sane and conscious choice to be this way."
"Silence! I am good and you are evil! End of story! I will hear no agrument, I will not be rational, and I will not practice the same kindness and mercy demanded of you. Did I mention that I get to say and do whatever I want to you and you may not retaliate in any way? These are the cosmic rules. They are this way because I said so. I am The Light and you are simply you." A face then emerged and scowled at her.
It looked oddly like Rain, and NoFace wondered if this was the given form of The Light or if it possessed the ability to spontaneously make itself look like her mother or her sister. The thought made unbidden nausea and bile rise in her throat. Afraid of the answer, she decided not to ask. The little smile had not left her face and she parted her lips momentarily and tilted her head the other way. "Well." She dusted her hands against each other and looked around. "I thank The Light for coming by and informing me of my cosmic damnation. It's always good to be in the know. Was there anything else? I have some ramen on the stove that requires my unholy attention."
"May you find nothing but misery!" The Light flew away in what would have been a huff if there had been a body with which to huff in the first place. NoFace slammed the sliding glass door.
"What the s*** was that?" Killjoy asked. He had been playing dormant through the whole exchange.
"I guess I'm Public Enemy #1 in the Perfect-Being-of-Light demographic." NoFace shrugged but didn't turn around. "Someone must really hate me." Her voice cracked then and Killjoy cursed the sensitivity chip. She had a guilt complex before it was installed. But now the guilt was out of control. "What's worse, Killjoy? This is The Light people have been raving about. Even if I told everyone it was out to get me, they wouldn't believe it."
"You ask me?" Killjoy said, draping himself around her shoulders. "The Light doesn't fancy itself your nemesis. It really is. I'm sorry."
"Me too." NoFace wiped her eyes and patted Killjoy ont he pommell. "I'm sorry it's not made of something I can shoot."
